Based on the information available to date (March 2020) regarding COVID-19 in Italy, we conclude that COVID-19 is approximately five to ten times more lethal than normal seasonal influenza (for ages 50 and above).
The ‘lethality’ here relates to death post-infection, and hence the above statement makes no allowance for the high infectiousness of COVID-19 compared with a normal influenza virus.
