Care homes have become a controversial topic in the pandemic, for the saddest of reasons. They have experienced a very high COVID-19 mortality rate, caused to some degree by poor policy. This is analogous to what happened in some other countries, Italy for example.
The prioritisation of provision of sufficient personal protective equipment (PPE) to NHS hospitals over care homes resulted in staff being placed at increased risk, and increased the likelihood of rapid spread within the care homes.
In this bulletin, we summarise the experience to date. Around 1-in-7 care home residents died between 13 March and 5 June – doubling the toll that might have otherwise been expected. We also draw out lessons for the future.
